Macs get Entourage update, Outlook to follow

Posted on 13 August 2009 by TechRadar.com

Not everyone who owns a Mac is a design student or film producer.

Microsoft today threw its Apple business users a bone with the announcement of Exchange support for Entourage and a new Outlook for Mac application coming soon.

For current Entourage users, Microsoft Entourage 2008 for Mac, Web Services Edition is available today as a free download from http://www.microsoft.com/mac/downloads.mspx?link_name=downloads.

See, Microsoft really loves Apple after all

The update promises performance and reliability improvements, and enables users to sync Tasks, Notes and Categories. It gives Macs support for the latest version of Microsoft’s corporate Exchange Server, and improves compatibility with Windows-based Office software.

The Entourage update is part of the Office 2008 Business Edition package, available in mid-September for L440 (or L270 for an upgrade). The application also includes: Microsoft Document Connection for Mac to improve access and browsing to documents on SharePoint and Microsoft Office Live Workspace, 200 business templates and clip art and some online training.

The other announcement – the arrival of Outlook for the Mac – will happen with the next version of Office. This will feature a new database that enables backing up files with Time Machine and Spotlight searching and information rights management to control the distribution of files and messages.

Eric Wilfrid, general manager for the MacBU at Microsoft, said: “Outlook for Mac will bring features our customers have long requested that make working across platforms even easier. I think people will see that this move to Outlook for Mac is more than just a name change.”

Newsmy A8HD portable media player

The Newsmy A8HD portable media player hails from China, and there is very little known about this apart from the fact that it will be equipped with a 4.3″ touchscreen display with 480 x 272 resolution, 8GB of internal memory, support for a variety of video codecs and the ability to output 720p video straight onto your new flat panel display in the living room. No word on pricing or availability, but chances are this will never make it Stateside considering the number of more established PMPs already available there.

TruFocals Make You Look Nerdy, But Gives You Super-Vision

Posted on 13 August 2009 by pulse2.com

trufocals-ss1
Stephen Kurtin’s invention, the TruFocals are a pair of eyeglasses that lets you choose the perfect focus for every distance from near or far.  On the bridge of the glasses is a small slider that adjusts the focus of the glasses.  Each lens on the glasses actually has two lenses on them.  One is flexible and the other is firm.

The flexible lens that is closer to the eye is a transparent membrane attached to a surface.  The pocket between the two lenses has a small amount of crystal clear fluid.  Once the slider is moved on the bridge, the fluid is pushed and this alters the shape of the flexible lens.

The retail price of the TruFocals are about $895.  Having Lasik done would cost about $1,000-$2,000 more than the cost of TruFocals.

Vertu Ascent Ti Neon screams ‘I’m rich and I watch Saved By The Bell reruns’

Posted on 13 August 2009 by EnGadgetMobile.com

Variants of existing Vertu models are a dime a dozen. Actually, come to think of it, they’re the exact opposite of “a dime a dozen,” but we digress — the point is that we don’t really get too worked up these days when Nokia’s luxury brand decides to refinish one of its hilariously expensive models in another shade of ostrich hide. There are a few key differences with the new Ascent Ti Neon, though: one, they’ve actually reshaped it to better fit in a purse; two, they’ve changed out the leather bits for rubber; and three, it’s neon, for goodness’ sake. Despite the revised shape, the phone is exactly the same on the inside as any other Ascent Ti already on the market, which means euro 3G, a 3 megapixel cam, and 4GB of storage. It’ll all go for the bargain basement price of £6,000 (about $9,900) when it hits in October.

BenQ grabs green card with LED-backlit V2200 / V2400 Eco monitors

Posted on 13 August 2009 by Engadget.com

We firmly believe that the all-too-popular ‘green card‘ is flailed about far too haphazardly these days, but whatever the case, BenQ‘s sure doing its darnedest to explain just how much Ma Earth adores its latest duo of V Series monitors. The 24-inch V2400 Eco and 21.5-inch V2200 Eco are both outfitted with LED-backlit 1080p panels, comically inflated dynamic contrast ratios (5,000,000:1, if you can even believe that) and a shell constructed from 28 percent recycled plastic. Meanwhile, we’re told these panels can suck down around 30 percent less power while in Eco mode, and overall, they consume approximately 36 percent less power than CCFL displays. If you’re onboard with everything, look for these to land in your neck of the woods soon, with China getting ‘em first in a week or so.

Liverpool is Google’s top-ranked football team

Posted on 13 August 2009 by LaptopBlog.org

Fans of Liverpool FC rejoice, as your team is now officially the top of Google’s most-searched for football teams.

To be top, you need to have a significant amount of hits and Liverpool managed to garner an amazing 16 million in the last month alone.

Its nearest rival, Chelsea, could only manage 13 million – proving that Abramovich’s billions can’t buy them everything.

The teams battling against Google relegation are: Hull City with 450 thousand hits, Stoke City 300 thousand searches, and a lowly Bolton Wanderers with a mere 250 thousand looks.

Google Claret-y

Fans of Burnley who should be celebrating too, as their team has seen a 5,000 per cent increase in searches for season tickets. It’s not known what percentage of these baulked at the price and decided just to watch their team on Sky instead.

Dig a little deeper with regards to Burnley’s web popularity and it might have something to do with the football club’s Chairmen back in May offering free season tickets if the club were promoted.

If you want to see which players are the most popular, according to Google, then point your browser over to the Sun’s website, where the paper has created its own fantasy football line-up out of Google’s big-hitters.

When it comes to the WAGs, it seems that Ashley Cole’s wife Cheryl Cole is favourite on Google, beating the likes of Victoria Beckham and Coleen Rooney to the top spot.
