Three iPad giveaways in three days: day two, courtesy of CloudOn!

Posted on 12 April 2012 by Brad Molen

ImageThe amazing three day iPad giveaway campaign continues, and we're only halfway through. Day two is already here, and it's time to enter to win another new iPad. This time it's CloudOn (iTunes link) that's hooking you up with the opportunity to nab a 16GB WiFi-only version, as a way of celebrating Tuesday's release of its latest update in the App Store. The free app gives you the ability to create, edit and share Office docs with Dropbox, Adobe Reader and Box synchronization as well as a few other goodies.

This time around, you'll need to answer a specific question in the comments as part of the entry process: what are two things you'd like to see on your iPad to help you stay productive while on the go? Good luck!

PS Vita gets (another) firmware update, free-to-play Montezuma Blitz available now

It's been barely a week since the last one, but Sony's now begun rolling out firmware version 1.67. It's another meaty download, weighing in at just under 100MB, although there's no detail on what it changes -- we're still exploring the update. Following the refresh, you can also pick up the PS Vita's latest free game, Montezuma Blitz, a Bejewelled-style puzzle game. However, it's not the first game to be offered up free on the Vita and some pesky in-game purchases taint that freebie status a little. Both the update and game are available to download on your Vita now.

Nokia makes Lumia 900 free to all AT&T customers, now through April 21st

Posted on 10 April 2012 by Zachary Lutz

Nokia makes Lumia 900 free to all AT&T customers, now through April 24thNow through April 21st, any AT&T customer who purchases a Lumia 900 will receive a $100 rebate from Nokia -- effectively making the device free. Ostensibly a gesture of goodwill from the Finnish manufacturer, which confirmed that a small number of early handsets shipped with faulty software that caused memory management issues and eventually data connectivity woes. It insists this problem is now fixed, and that come April 16th, all affected consumers may swap their device at any AT&T store or merely download the update. Previously, AT&T had announced a $100 mail-in rebate for new subscribers that'd purchased the Lumia 900, but thanks to Nokia, it's now effectively free for all. You might wanna jump on this one.

Nokia’s free color 710 covers are amazing every day, during April at least

Posted on 07 April 2012 by James Trew

Nokia's free color 710 covers are amazing every day, during April at leastNokia no doubt won over a few undecided minds last month when it ran a promotion gifting new members to the Lumia 710 owners club with a colorful cover of their choice. We assume it was successful, because it's back. Yes, for the month of April, US-based adopters -- both new and old -- of the mid-level Nokia phone can claim a free chromatic cover. All you have to do is visit the source link below and punch in a few details, Nokia will then ship it out free of charge. We're not trying to influence you, of course, but the Engadget blue one looks pretty good.

Samsung throws in free extended battery with VZW Galaxy Nexus, applies to new purchases only

Posted on 02 April 2012 by Dana Wollman

Samsung must be keenly aware that the Galaxy Nexus' battery life takes a hit on Verizon's LTE network: for a limited time, the outfit's throwing in a free 2,100mAh extended battery for first-time buyers (sorry, current Nexus owners are out of luck). To take advantage of the promotion, you'll have to purchase it through Samsung Direct (link below), which means you'll be paying $300 for the device and agreeing to a two-year contract. As Android and Me notes, though, you'd save quite a bit of money picking up the VZW Nexus and accompanying battery pack at Amazon for a combined $134. Suffice to say, then, this isn't a stellar deal, but those of you who disagree can avail yourselves through May 10, or while supplies last.

ImageNot everyone needs a Nokia Lumia 900 -- in fact, we imagine that there are plenty of you out there that could care less about LTE and the larger screen. That's where the Lumia 800 comes in real handy... especially an unlocked version that would come to you completely gratis. The beauty has been made possible by Quixby, a startup based in Ohio that just launched a new service that could make it easier to buy, build and share a computer. Intrigued? Enter to win, then take a look-see.

PSA: TurboTax on Android is free through Sunday if you start your taxes before then

Posted on 29 March 2012 by Dana Wollman

If you've ever filed your taxes on an iPad, you know Intuit's TurboTax app is free to download, but that you'll have to pay up once you're ready to submit those returns. But, in an effort to promote its newish apps for Android tablets and the Kindle Fire, the company's giving the entire number-crunching cow away for free -- at least through this weekend. Just download between tomorrow (Friday) and Sunday and make sure you start your taxes before Monday (it's okay if you finish them later). To be clear, this includes both federal and state-level taxes, which you'd normally pay for separately for $29.99 and up. Another quid pro quo: this won't work on handsets, even though the Kindle runs a customized version of Android 2.3. If you own a tablet it should run smoothly on Honeycomb and Ice Cream Sandwich, though. In any case, to those of you who've been putting off your taxes, happy downloading, procrastinators.

Edgar Alvarez contributed to this report.

Spotify: by the way, you still get unlimited songs with a free account

Posted on 29 March 2012 by Brian Heater

Remember that six month deadline we warned you about back in January? Well, it looks like Spotify wasn't so gung-ho about limiting the free version of its service, after all. The site is celebrating its nine month anniversary in the States by reminding users that it still has yet to impose a song limit for the unpaid variety. Spotify is extending the deal -- it's not saying for how long, though the mere reminder could certainly be taken as a sign that the sometimes overbearing record labels aren't hounding it to switch things up anytime soon. Of course, Spotify still really wants to get you to opt into a paid account to drop some of those ads from your stream, but if you don't want to pay, that's cool too.

FreedomPop rumored to introduce iPhone case with free WiMAX service

Posted on 21 March 2012 by Zachary Lutz

FreedomPop rumored to introduce iPhone case with free WiMAX serviceLending a bit of credence to the notion that it'll have life beyond LightSquared, an insider at FreedomPop is now suggesting that it'll debut a case for the iPhone 4 / 4S that features a WiMAX radio, hotspot capabilities and delivers a free (albeit, limited) data service. This rumored accessory would complement the company's two previously known devices, which include a USB dongle and a dedicated hotspot. For those unfamiliar, FreedomPop aims to take on a role similar to NetZero -- it's said the company will offer each customer 1GB of free data per month, where each megabyte consumed beyond that limit will cost one penny. That's not to suggest that everything is free, however: the insider also states that customers will need to front a $100 deposit for this alleged case, although that money can be retrieved at any point, so long as the product is returned in good condition. Naturally, the utility of FreedomPop's service will be sorely limited if it's only available via WiMAX networks, but we've got a hunch that a few iPod Touch owners might find it quite useful in their attempt to skirt the carriers.
