Radiohead Says Singles Only, But Albums Live On

Posted on 13 August 2009 by ReadWriteWeb.com

radiohead_albums_aug09b.jpgRadiohead’s frontman Thom Yorke announced that the band will no longer release full-length studio albums and instead focus on downloadable singles. In response, Fast Company’s Kit Eaton, declared that the concept of albums is still alive and simply evolving. Part of that evolution is Apple’s Cocktail interactive album effort. He argues that albums maintain their purpose to communicate musical themes, “the same way that a curated collection of a painter’s works does”. Nevertheless, it may be that in some cases, the album will thrive for the exact opposite reasons.

While Radiohead’s “In Rainbows” was an amazing success both as an album and as a new sliding scale revenue model, Yorke and band mates are poised to focus on singles, and for them this is great. Radiohead has a loyal fan base, enough money to survive, and the freedom to negotiate independent licensing and distribution deals. Basically, Radiohead can do whatever Radiohead wants to do. But perhaps more importantly, the band has the creative freedom to experiment – in fact, their fans expect it.

With the cost of professional music production and audio engineers, few bands have the luxury to put out experimental singles on major labels. Labels simply won’t put marketing dollars into something they aren’t sure is commercially viable. Albums are the perfect place to sandwich those sweetheart orphan tracks that artists love and labels simply can’t classify. In the past, an album’s B-side was a place where musicians could debut new styles and place less-commercial tracks. However, as music downloads outnumber physical disc sales, and singles outsell albums, the margin for risk taking gets smaller everyday.

For this reason, whether wrapped in interactive material or not, it’s likely that a number of musicians will insist on producing albums simply to leverage marketing efforts and challenge their fans.

Federal Funds for Startup Incubator? Memphis Firm Takes a Shot at ARRA Half Million

Posted on 13 August 2009 by ReadWriteWeb.com

According to reports from local news sources, a Memphis startup incubator and business accelerator is taking aim at a grant from the federal government to fund its expansion and growth.

EmergeMemphis, an incubator with 26 companies currently in its stable, is home to ventures of all stripes: A budding ISP, software development shops, a hosting service, several marketing and PR firms, investment groups, web developers, a mobile gaming company, and a research lab from a well-known corporate name. They’ve applied for a $500,000 grant from the Economic Development Administration under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act to help cover a $1.26 million planned capital project – capital meaning, in this case, buildings and equipment rather than funds for investment.

The planned expansion is necessary, wrote EmergeMemphis in their grant application, because the incubator is currently operating at capacity. The capital projects – specifically, rennovations to the top floor and rooftop of the building EM currently occupies – would allow for the adoption of 10 to 12 new companies and 60 to 70 more employees.

“The Economic Development Administration recognizes the outstanding and demonstrated success (EmergeMemphis) has accomplished,” wrote local EDA director H. Philip Paradice Jr.

“The EDA is fully committed to working with highly accomplished business partners in order to increase jobs, promote innovation and competitiveness and enhance regions for growth and success in the worldwide economy.”

To date, 33 companies employing 215 people have graduated from EmergeMemphis’ program; according to EM, a full ninety percent of those companies still exist or have been acquired.

Already, EmergeMemphis has received grants for this project totaling nearly a million dollars. They have accepted a $600,000 grant from the state of Tennessee’s Fastrack program; $275,000 from the Hyde Family and Kemmons Wilson Family Foundations; and $65,000 from the Plough Foundation and the EmergeMemphis board of directors.

Nokia-e52-1

If you’ve got a hectic lifestyle your going to need a phone that can keep up, businesses and road warriors could do worse than take a close look at the recently released Nokia E52. A phone that takes the notion of staying in contact and up to date very seriously indeed.

Underneath those chiselled looks beats the heart of a mobile power house, the specs make impressive reading. Features include QVGA display, 3.2-megapixel camera, A-GPS, HSDPA/ HSUPA, WLAN, UPNP, DLNA, Bluetooth 2.0 EDR, 3.5mm audio jack, microsd card, noise cancellation and the latest 600mhz cpu.

The goodies list is to long to mention here but the standout features are 8 hrs talk time and 28 hrs standby, remote lock/wipe over-the-air, the 10.2 Mbps download and 2 Mbps upload is enough for to keep even the most modern network busy for years to come and if your the travelling type who needs to tether your phone to a laptop, you wont find a better phone to stay connected at high speed at this price and the 6hrs of continuous 3G use is unheard of previously.

Running the very latest S60 3rd Edition with a browser that’s said to render pages faster than the iPhone 3GS, the latest Nokia’s absolutely fly compared to even their most recent cousins. Messaging is catered for with full Ovi access, Instant Messaging and Nokia Messaging, a html email client that’s a breeze to setup, just give it your email address, password and the E52 will do the rest, pushing emails to your phone as they arrive. In a meeting when the phone rings? no problem, just flip over the phone to silence it. Nice.

A-GPS plus a compass, which comes preloaded with Nokia Maps application is a boon, although the 2.4″ screen is not really well suited to use as an in-car satnav. Google Maps is the real use for GPS here, giving all the location based services you will ever need.

When it comes time to relax, the E52 is no slouch here either, the 3.5mm audio jack or Bluetooth Stereo allow you to make the most of the built in media player, FM radio with RDS and a podcasting client with a huge selection of podcasts to choose from. A 1GB memory card is included to get you going, a bigger card would’ve been nice to see, but memory is cheap these days and 32GB card will slot in nicely.

Available now for L229 unlocked and free on contract, this phone is ideal for those who dont need a qwerty keyboard and just want a device that can keep up with their hectic lifestyle with a minimum of fuss.

CourseSmart releases eTextbook reader for iPhone

Posted on 13 August 2009 by Engadget.com

We have no idea who would choose an iPhone app over a real, honest-to-goodness textbook, but if you really want to spend marathon cram sessions hunched over a 3.5-inch display, a company called CourseSmart has just made its entire catalog available for viewing with its eTextbooks app. Certainly, it seems that the company’s selection is nothing to sneeze at — electronic access to over 7,000 titles from 12 publishers — so if you’re already using the service, additional on-the-go access to the books (as well as the handy search, notes, and bookmarks) might prove quite worthwhile. Keep in mind that you’re not actually downloading the books — so your mileage will vary, depending on the quality of your Internet connection. Maybe this device is actually marketed to students who need a helping hand (or, in this case, handheld) during finals? Regardless, this is further evidence that the electronic textbook market is one to keep an eye on — if only someone could figure out how to do it right. Now, if you’ll excuse us, we’d like to get back to Knife Music. Video after the break.

Apple might be planning keynote for week of September 7th, might have new products on offer

Posted on 13 August 2009 by Engadget.com

We’re hearing “multiple sources” are now reporting that Apple is most likely planning a keynote event — possibly for the week of September 7th. There’s also the requisite murmuring that one Steve Jobs may make an appearance — though of course, there’s also nothing more solid than wishes and fairy dust to back that one up. As far as possible product launches go, well, there have been significant whisperings about upcoming iPod / iTunes developments as of late, including the company’s reported dealings with major record labels. This would fall in line with Apple’s habit of releasing iPods every fall, and we’ve heard plenty about upcoming iPod touches which boast, among other things — a camera and microphone. Daring Fireball has also reported that these bad boys will come in 16, 32 and 64GB varieties running $199, $299, and $399, respectively. In more salacious gossip, there’s the possible Apple tablet we’ve been hearing about, but there’s no solid word on any products for now. We’ll be watching this one closely, we assure you.

Zune HD specs fill in the blanks on video format support, battery life and more

Posted on 13 August 2009 by Engadget.com

Now that everything Zune HD is official and available for pre-order, Microsoft has seen fit to loose official specs, putting to rest — at least until we can do a full hands on — questions about what to expect from the OLED touchscreen packing device. From dimensions (52.7 mm x 102.1 mm x 8.9 mm, 2.6 oz) to battery life (24 hours for music with wireless off, up to 4 hours of video) and charge time (3 hours, 2 hours to 90%.) While the offical site (incorrectly) currently lists max video res at barely-better-than-DVD 720 x 480, we contacted Microsoft and received the official specs on video support, and if for some reason you needed to hear it again: the Tegra chip is a beast. Ready for HDTV playback when it’s plugged into the AV dock, the Zune software supports up to 1280 x 720, 30 frames per second at a max 14 Mbps bitrate for WMV HD and h.264 sources. Confirmed still a bummer? No wireless video streaming from the Zune Video Marketplace, though the specs do indicate that purchases and rentals will work across all three screens, PC, Zune and Xbox 360. Check the corrected specs after the break, now all that’s left is getting some alone time with one.

Newsmy A8HD portable media player

The Newsmy A8HD portable media player hails from China, and there is very little known about this apart from the fact that it will be equipped with a 4.3″ touchscreen display with 480 x 272 resolution, 8GB of internal memory, support for a variety of video codecs and the ability to output 720p video straight onto your new flat panel display in the living room. No word on pricing or availability, but chances are this will never make it Stateside considering the number of more established PMPs already available there.

Microsoft’s Zune HD AV Dock and Power Pack up for pre-order

Posted on 13 August 2009 by Engadget.com

No need to hide your unabashed love for Microsoft — we know you’ve already plopped down a few bills to pre-order your Zune HD, but did you bother sinking a few Jacksons on high-margin accessories? If not, we’ll have you know that the Zune HD AV Dock (left) and Zune HD AV & Power Pack (right) can be pre-ordered right now from Microsoft’s online store as well as through Amazon, and we suspect most every other respectable e-tailer will pick ‘em up soonly. Both devices are expected to ship alongside the device itself on September 15th, with the former including a dock, three inserts, wireless remote, AC adapter, HDMI cable and AV output cable for $89.99. The latter is meant to pipe content from your docked Zune HD onto a TV, as it includes an AC adapter, HDMI cable and AC output cable for $49.99.

[Thanks, Thomas]
