PlayStation Network moniker sacked, falls under Sony Entertainment Network umbrella on Feb. 7

Posted on 05 February 2012 by Joe Pollicino

Listen up, those of you with PlayStation Network IDs. Sony Computer Entertainment International has announced that, as of February 7th, the PSN will fold into its existing Sony Entertainment Network. The company has aimed the move at clearly unifying the services of PSN and SEN, such as Music Unlimited. Fret not, however, as Joystiq notes that the change is basically a looks-only affair, meaning your current account information and related services will remain the same. Notably, the moniker refresh won't apply to the PSP, which will curiously remain under the PSN moniker for network services. The news comes as a part of SCEI's updated Terms of Service and privacy policy, both of which take effect on the same day. Those changes, by the way, appear to mainly be regarding location-based services for PS Vita, and parental controls for sub-master accounts. After all of the bad times PSN has been through, its upcoming SEN identity might just be the new outlook on (online) life it needed all along -- and hopefully with less downtime. Hit up the source link below for the full details.

Xbox co-creator brings together Atari ‘dream team’ for mobile gaming startup

Posted on 03 February 2012 by Donald Melanson

A new mobile gaming startup that's yet to release a single game isn't the sort of thing we'd normally cover 'round here, but the story behind Los Angeles-based Innovative Leisure is anything but ordinary. The man behind the company is the co-creator of the Xbox, Seamus Blackley, and he's brought with him eleven industry veterans that he calls "the dream team from Atari," including the likes of Van Burnham, Ed Logg, Rich Adam, Tim Skelly, Owen Rubin, and Ed Rotberg. While those names may not be familiar to everyone, you'll surely recognize some of the games they were responsible for: Asteroids, Centipede, Gauntlet, Missile Command, Battlezone, S.T.U.N. Runner, Major Havoc and Space Duel, to name a few.

Speaking with VentureBeat, Blackley describes mobile devices as "the new arcade" and 99 cent games as the "new quarter," adding that he's aiming to carry on where Atari left off, "focusing on innovation in gameplay." To help with that, the company has secured backing from THQ, which has reportedly agreed to an initial slate of ten games, seven of which are now in development (with only the iPhone and iPad mentioned as supported platforms so far). Unfortunately, details remain light beyond that, with Blackley only offering late summer or fall as an estimated release date for the first titles. In the meantime, you can find more of the backstory at the links below (THQ's press release can also be found after the break).

NASA debuts two new educational games for iOS, Facebook

Posted on 02 February 2012 by Donald Melanson

NASA is no stranger to apps, but the space agency is branching out further into some new territory with its two latest offerings: a pair of educational games. The first is Sector 33, an air traffic control simulator for iOS devices that certainly won't be confused with Flight Control, but which NASA hopes will help teach math and possibly get folks interested in aviation. Those who prefer their games a bit more casual can also now try out NASA's very first multiplayer Facebook game, Space Race Blast Off, which tests folks' knowledge of various space-related topics (and is considerably more challenging than it first appears). Additional details and the games themselves can be found at the source links below.

[Thanks, Mo]

Sony, PlayStation Vita

Posted on 01 February 2012 by Esat Dedezade

The portable gaming market is now unrecognisable compared to the PSP’s launch in 2004 — smartphones with cheap casual games rule, and although the Nintendo 3DS has been flaunting its 3D party trick for some time now, hardcore gamers have been left twiddling their thumbs. Until now. Drum roll please for the PlayStation Vita – the handheld that wants to save portable gaming…

Sony PlayStation Vita – Design

Despite looking like an aged camera-toting PSP, the Vita feels much more luxurious. It's heavy enough to feel premium but light enough to prevent arm-ache when you play. Its twin analogues sticks are perfect for console-style gaming, and although we'd have preferred triggers, its shoulder buttons feel natural enough at the end of your index fingers.

Sony's tradition of proprietary peripherals sadly continues however, with a custom USB/charging port and overpriced 4GB (£18) and 16GB (£45) proprietary memory cards, which most games require.

Sony PlayStation Vita – Dual touchscreens

On top of its traditional controls, the Vita has a touchscreen on the front and a touchpad on the back. The former is used for navigating menus, web surfing and some in-game controls, the latter for gaming only. The one downside is that you’re forced to use touch controls in situations where the hardcore gamer might prefer to opt for the real thing.

Sony PlayStation Vita – Display and power

The Vita's 5in 220ppi OLED display produces sharp, punchy pictures. Movies look lovely, but the real thrill is the gaming graphics — the four-core CPU and GPU make this a real powerhouse, leaving Nintendo's 3DS cowering away in the corner, All that oomph comes at the expense of battery life though – you’ll get five hours max when gaming.

Sony PlayStation Vita – Game lineup

We've played 14 of the Vita's 33 strong launch titles and are yet to find a duff one. Standout titles include the graphically stunning Uncharted: Golden Abyss and the delightfully quirky Gravity Rush, a Japanese title which features a young female amnesiac and a gravity altering cat team up against blob monsters.

Turning your office desk into a battlefield with the AR-based Reality Fighters is also an impressive example of how the Vita's camera can supplement the gaming experience.

Sony PlayStation Vita – Extras

The Vita packs in a whole host of social features including Near (a service which lets you see what nearby Vita users are playing), and Party which lets you chat and text with other PSN gamers. Browsing is also a pleasant experience with smooth scrolling and pinch-to-zoom action, although page rendering could be a little snappier.

Sony PlayStation Vita – Verdict

The PlayStation Vita is the portable console that hardcore gamers have been waiting for. It trumps the Nintendo 3DS and smartphone competition in raw power, graphics and quality of titles, while the dual analogue sticks and rear touchpad controls provide lots of room for future innovation. It may be pricey, but for proper gaming on the move, the Vita is in a league of its own.

Humble Bundle expands to Android with World of Goo, Anomaly and more

Posted on 31 January 2012 by Donald Melanson

The choose-your-own-price Humble Bundle has proven to be a runaway success on desktop platforms -- helping fund indie developers and causes like Child's Play and the EFF alike -- and it's now finally taken the plunge onto mobile devices. That move was kicked off today with the Humble Bundle for Android, which includes the games Anomaly: Warzone Earth, Osmos, and EDGE. Those three are available for any price you choose, but you'll also get World of Goo thrown in if you pay more than the average price (just over $5 as of this writing). As always, you can also choose how you'd like your contribution split between developers and charity (and the Humble organization itself), and you'll even get access the Windows, Mac and Linux versions of the same games as an added bonus. Hit the source link below to get started, or head on past the break for a video if you need any more convincing. We should also note that the Android games are offered as direct downloads, not through the Android Market; installations instructions are provided following your purchase.

Steam mobile beta now open to all, still of questionable utility

Posted on 31 January 2012 by Terrence O'Brien

Steam MobileIf you were dismayed to find yourself waiting in the queue for a beta invite after downloading the mobile Steam client the other day, fret no more -- the trial is now open to all who desire entry. Of course, it's still really just a companion to the desktop shop and not a must-have mobile gaming market. We're sure some of you have more friends on Steam than you do in meatspace, though, so being able to chat with fellow gaming addicts or purchase the latest DLC pack for Arkham City while on the go might be the greatest thing to ever happen to you.

Steam beta journeys to Android and iOS, for select invitees

Posted on 27 January 2012 by Zachary Lutz

Our friends at Joystiq are members of a privileged club of which we are not. We've both downloaded and installed the mobile version of Steam -- now available as a free beta download for Android and iOS -- but where they found Mac and PC games for sale, along with the ability to chat with friends, browse profiles and read gaming news, we were greeted with red text that states our accounts are not part of the beta. Damn our luck! For those interested to give Valve's handiwork a spin, it seems that downloading and installing the app puts you in the queue for a future invite. Won't you join us in the line?
